Former poll worker, Town of Oconomowoc. As absentee ballots arrive at Town Hall, I believe each one is logged in on a form or envelope. I believe they are locked in a vault. I was not part of that process.
Absentee ballots were opened starting at 7 am on election day. As the ballot is voted, a poll worker calls the absentee votet’s name aloud. Red pen is used to enter the absentee voter’s number “in line” in both books (one for the county, one for the municipality). I believe that # is also entered on the outside envelope. All envelopes are saved and after all voting is complete, they’re placed in a separate envelope. They probably have been logged on that envelope. Envelopes are signed and sealed. All ballots are saved in sealed document bags. All machine tapes are signed by a specific number of poll workers and sealed. All spoiled ballots are retained in a separate sealed envelope. Record keeping is meticulous. The 2 books are reconciled and must perfectly match. The voter number (in-line order) on the little white paper handed to the voter with the blank ballot must match the total number of votes. The voter number is spindled before the voter puts their ballot in the machine to be counted.
I received a letter requesting poll workers for this year’s elections. I will not work because of the threatening atmosphere especially since I’m a card carrying Waukesha Dem and my donations are public record on Open Secrets.
